The Patchwork Skirt
- Start by cutting lengths of each of your cotton fabrics, make sure that
they are all the same width. I used a width of 5 inches and cut them with my
rotory cutter and board.
- Cut into random lengths. I cut mine into lengths ranging from about 6
inches to about 18 inches.
- With right sides together, sew the pieces end to end. A 1/4 inch seam
allowance on your serger would work great if you have one. When finished, you
should have a very long row of pieces.
- Cut into segments the length that you want the skirt to be. Don't forget
to include the seam allowance at the top, the hem, and 2 inches for evening up
the edges.
- Sew these segments side-by-side with right sides together. Try to avoid
having too much of the same print touching itself when possible.
- Even up the top and bottom edges.
- Gather to top edge of the skirt and attach to the bodice with right sides
together. Baste seam and check for problems before stitching with a regular
stitch length.
- Hem the bottom edge with your desired method. I simply turned the edge
under twice and top stitched in place.
