The Patchwork Skirt

  1. Start by cutting lengths of each of your cotton fabrics, make sure that they are all the same width. I used a width of 5 inches and cut them with my rotory cutter and board.
  2. Cut into random lengths. I cut mine into lengths ranging from about 6 inches to about 18 inches.
  3. With right sides together, sew the pieces end to end. A 1/4 inch seam allowance on your serger would work great if you have one. When finished, you should have a very long row of pieces.
  4. Cut into segments the length that you want the skirt to be. Don't forget to include the seam allowance at the top, the hem, and 2 inches for evening up the edges.
  5. Sew these segments side-by-side with right sides together. Try to avoid having too much of the same print touching itself when possible.
  6. Even up the top and bottom edges.
  7. Gather to top edge of the skirt and attach to the bodice with right sides together. Baste seam and check for problems before stitching with a regular stitch length.
  8. Hem the bottom edge with your desired method. I simply turned the edge under twice and top stitched in place.
