Just Call Me Lou

Hello Everyone,
My name is Louisa Mae Childs, but everyone calls me Lou. I am the vice president and co-owner of Down Home Dreams, Inc.. I have an Associate Degree in German which is good for absolutely nothing, and a long career in business management which has been utilized greatly in managing DHD. I have tried to combined my 40+ years experience in sewing, crafting, and painting to create the intricate detail shown in my thread art. Creating realistic embroidery is my favorite type of digitizing. I also enjoy editing and manipulating stitches in order to create the cleanest, smoothest running designs possible.

I am married with three children, Paula (President of DHD), Marcus (who also holds a position with the company) and Eric. My husband, Dale, is a computer engineer who does some of DHD's programming and helps keep the hardware running. I have five grandchildren, three boys and two girls. I enjoy reading, sewing, traveling and cooking. I hate housework, loud music and bigoted people. I am currently taking computer, business and graphics classes at our local community college.

Personal Interests

Sewing & Embroidery
I was taught to sew, by my mother and my grandmother, on a Singer Treadle Machine. I still own that machine and it is one of my most prized possessions. I now own top of the line machines, as well as a collection of antique machines, but that Singer still takes me back to the first doll dress I ever made. I have never stopped loving the texture of the fabrics, the smell of the dyes or the pure joy I get from creating something beautiful.

I have always loved to paint. I could lose myself for hours in a canvas. However, I have degenerative arthritis and I can no longer paint, but I can still create beautiful art with my embroidery. The computer is my paintbrush and the threads are my paints and I can "paint" on a canvas of. fabric. This gives me great joy.

I am currently making an embroidered wall hanging using designs from DHD140 and DHD166.

Education
If I had a personal motto, it would probably be, "I read, therefore I am." I hope I never stop learning and striving to understand.  As a founding member of and educator for the Embroidery University http://www.embroideryuniversity.com, I am able to pass on some of the things I have learned through my years in the embroidery industry.

I am in the process of writing an instruction  book for use with the CompuStitch Software.  In September, I begin my first quarter at Sinclair Community College where I will be taking a technical writing course, Microsoft Publisher and a 3d graphics Course.  I have been out of school for over 20 years and am both nervous and excited about taking classes again.

Genealogy
I am about one fourth American Indian, mostly Choctaw and Pueblo. Growing up, I heard stories about my mother's grandmother and the Mississippi Choctaws. My husband's family is mainly Louisiana French. I want to be able to pass these rich heritages on to our grandchildren. I'm not as much interested in the family tree aspect as I am in the "stories." My grandfather could remember the Civil War and living on the reservation in Mississippi. These are things that are important for our children and grandchildren to know and understand. "We can't know where we are going unless we know where we have come from."

I am currently researching on mine and my husband's family histories.  Using My Family Tree has helped me to put together much of the information our families have gathered through the years.

Photo Re-touching Projects
I enjoy restoring family photographs. I am currently restoring all available photo's of my mother's half brother, Willie Jenkins.
